to see him obviously framed couldn’t help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land where justice is a game

how could the life of such a man be in the palm of some fool's hand?

one of the saddest things i’ve ever seen.
an innocent man in a living hell.

the kinds of people who should ever get the death penalty are serial killers, the guy they executed in texas on the same day as troy, nazis, terrorists, and people who sadistically torture people and animals.  so whether or not you dispute his guilt, did this man deserve to lose his life?  does this make the victim’s family whole?  does this bring markmacphail back?  does the death of troy bring them peace?

i don’t even know how i feel about police officers’ lives being worth more than a civilian’s…if “troy” shot me (as i am not a cop), he probably wouldn’t have gotten the death penalty.  if troy were white, he probably wouldn’t have gotten the death penalty.  if mark macphail were black, troy probably wouldn’t have gotten the death penalty.  i know being a cop is difficult and dangerous, but how does that automatically = a death sentence?  particularly if his identity as a cop wasn’t known because he was out of uniform, ergo he was not  targeted as a member of law enforcement.

the antiterrorism and effective death penalty act of 1996, in the wake of the oklahoma city bombing, is what limits  people who are sentenced to death from filing “frivolous” appeals for their lives.  seems like, in the wake of terrorism, the u.s. government has a consistent history of creating sweeping laws that are emotion-based responses to single events.  i mean, timothy mcveigh withdrew his final appeals and wanted his execution televised…not exactly someone who is going to draw out their incarceration.  which by the way, was only 6 years.

why can’t the death penalty either be eliminated except for the crimes i listed in the beginning, abolished completely, or have explicitly worded legislation which bars the number of appeals for, say, al qaeda, but not for a dude who shot one other dude in the heat of the moment.

 for your information:

the united states is in the company of:
afghanistan, central african republic (who also executes for witchcraft for fuck’s sake & “charlatanism”), china (in 2011, more than 2000 people have been executed), egypt, iran (more than 250 in 2011; many of them public), iraq, libya, mauritania (sodomy gets death), the koreas, nigeria (for sodomy & kidnapping), pakistan, palestinian authority (public ones), saudi arabia, sierra leone, somalia (public), sudan (prostitution, sodomy, & pretty much everything), syria (public), yemen (public; for homosexuality)

surprising places that are more civilized than the united states:
ARGENTINA, AZERBAIJAN, BOLIVIA, BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA, CAMBODIA, COLOMBIA (who abolished it in 1910), COSTA RICA (abolished in 1877), DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, GABON, GEORGIA, GUINEA-BISSAU, HAITI, HONDURAS, KOSOVO, KYRGYZSTAN, MAURITIUS, MEXICO, MOZAMBIQUE, NAMIBIA, NEPAL, NICARAGUA, PANAMA, PARAGUAY, PHILIPPINES, FUCKING RWANDA OF ALL PLACES, SENEGAL, SERBIA, SOUTH AFRICA, TOGO, TURKEY, TURKMENISTAN,UZBEKISTAN.
